From Surfing to the Workplace

When I was considering potential names for my business, I kept coming back to the word “flow”. Many years ago on a trip to CA, I was introduced to the concept of flow during a day of surfing lessons. I still recall the instructor talking about his experience of being completely focused on and in tune with the water, the movement, and his board while out surfing. Because I, too, have always been drawn to water and feel most grounded and centered when I am near it, it felt natural and right to include the word flow in the name.

Since that day in CA, I’ve learned that flow is a concept which was originally coined decades ago by positive psychologist Mihály Csikszentmihalyi, who developed a theory about the psychology of optimal experience. Much has been written about the elements connected to flow and how tuning in to these elements might positively influence one’s ability to connect to the present moment and to enhance performance in everything from surfing to yoga to work performance.

I am particularly interested in helping people connect to the flow within themselves and in their work.  This may include being more mindful and present in the moment, paying increased attention to what is happening in their bodies or in the room, learning to appreciate both content and process elements in their work, and balancing current skills with additional growth. I believe these ideas have broad applicability, and I’m excited to partner with others in their various consultative and training needs.
